Zig Zag Railway, Blue Mountains

Zig Zag Railway

Whether you are a steam train enthusiast or not, the Zig Zag Railway has plenty to offer all ages.

Located at Clarence, 10km east of Lithgow in the gorgeous Blue Mountains, the Zig Zag was built in the 1860's to transport people and produce from the Western plains of NSW to Sydney. In 1910 it was replaced by a 10 tunnel deviation.

A popular tourist destination for old and young alike, the Zig Zag Railway is great for school holidays. Take a step back in time aboard the steam train as it leaves Clarence station three times daily, at 11am, 1pm and 3pm. Everyday except Christmas Day.

Take in breathtaking views of a bygone era and experience life as it would have been for battlers years ago. Admire the difficult terrain that the builders overcame as they built the tracks amidst the Blue Mountains.

If the ol' Steam Engine doesn't entice the youngsters, we're pretty sure a bright blue train named Thomas will encourage the kids to scramble up the mountain. A Day Out With Thomas is a daily carnival experience offering a trip aboard Thomas the Tank Engine and visits to the adjoining workshops. Including rides, amusements, tattoos and face painting, kids will absoloutely love this day out. Make sure you book in advance.

If your more of a Harry Potter fan, the Wizard Express will run from 2010. Get sorted by the sorting hat, meet Hagrid and participate in all sorts of wizardly activities.

There is also a lot to offer for the adults, besides the beautiful views of the Blue Mountains, there will also be, from 2010, The Footplate Experience. At a price, you can help run and prepare the engine over the pit before descending down the steep grades.

Located on the Western side of the Blue Mountains about 3 hours from Sydney, the Zig Zag railway is easy to get to whether it be via train or car. Several coach companies also run daily buses to and from.

While in the Blue Mountains also consider visiting The Three Sisters and The Scenic Railway & Cable Car.

Stay at accommodation within the Blue Mountains and enjoy early morning scenic walks, breathtaking views and clean crisp mountain air.

There is so much to see and do in the Blue Mountains so if you are looking for an organised visit then try some tours of the Blue Mountains.
